Large tractor-trailer delivers 71-ton transformer for Seattle City Light substation upgrade

Oregon-based heavy equipment moving company Omega Morgan recently completed a complex transportation project, involving the delivery and installation of a 71-ton transformer in Shoreline, Seattle. The customer, Seattle City Light, ordered the transformer to replace an older model that had reached the end of its useful life. The new transformer, valued at $1.5 million, was built by Hyundai Industries and is designed to step down transmission voltage of 115 kilovolts to distribution voltage of 26 kilovolts to enhance the reliability of the substation.Specialized equipment and skills were required to transport the massive transformer from the Port of Seattle to the Shoreline substation. Omega Morgan used a specially designed articulated tractor trailer rig to move the 143,000-pound transformer into the substation on June 30th, 2014. Due to the size and weight of the transformer, a custom rail system was assembled to transport it from the trailer to a specially constructed concrete pad. The pad was fitted with earthquake dampers to minimize any potential damage in case of an earthquake.The delivery of the transformer was a complex operation that required coordination, expertise, and attention to detail. Omega Morgan’s team of project managers, engineers, and operators worked closely together to ensure the transformer was delivered safely and efficiently.
